Twilight Struggle: No. 1 for a reason

Twilight Struggle: No. 1 for a reason

I haven’t been this excited to talk about a particular game in a while. Granted, I’m always excited to talk about board games, but this one in particular, I’m uber excited to share. Which game is it? Twilight Struggle.

Twilight Struggle is ranked No. 1 for board games, war games and strategy games on boardgamegeek.com. That’s quite impressive. I’ve had this game for about a year and a half but have never played it until two weekends ago. And then I played it a second and third time in the next few days.

Twilight Struggle is a 2-player game that plays about 180  minutes. The mechanics seem daunting at first glance, but the main reason I just played it is because I’ve never wanted to bring a 2-player game to a gaming event. It seems very anti-social. So when a friend of mine who enjoys heavier board games had a few hours to sit with me to learn and play, I immediately busted it out.

Agricola: All Creatures Big and Small

Agricola: All Creatures Big and Small

Many board games list a minimum 2 players for the game, but in reality, you often a need a third or fourth person for the game to have some depth and playability. That isn’t the case for Agricola: All Creatures Big and Small.  This game, designed by board-game genius Uwe Rosenberg, is a spin-off of the classic game Agricola and is created specifically for two players.

Game play lasts about 30 minutes, with a total of 8 rounds. The box itself is compact and the components are solid. You receive wooden bits for your farm, and you guys already saw the animeeples that I use for the original Agricola game in my previous post.

Agricola: Farming, feeding and breeding

Agricola: Farming, feeding and breeding

One of the oldest games I own is Agricola. It’s a classic worker-placement strategy game by one of my favorite designers Uwe Rosenberg, who I mentioned in my post about Le Havre. I love Agricola so much that I played it twice this past weekend.

Each player starts with a farmer and a spouse, meaning you can take two turns per round. As you grow your family, each new member can take a turn as well. The game is played out over 14 Rounds occurring in 6 Stages, with a Harvest at the end of Rounds 4, 7, 9, 11, 13, and 14. During Harvest, your crops come off the field, you feed your workers, and your animals breed.

Russian Railroads and holiday White Elephant

Russian Railroads and holiday White Elephant

Hello, peeps of the Internet! It’s been quite a hectic December with the holidays and major life changes, but it’s been a great week of board-gaming.

I was happy to play my new copy of Russian Railroads this week. I actually received the game a few weeks ago from my BGG Secret Santa. On the BGG website, you sign up to be assigned a Secret Santa target and send $50-ish gifts out into the world. The person who received me was super duper generous, as I had received three large games, as well as a donation in my name to Oxfam so some impoverished family would receive a pair of goats. The other two games I received were Android: Netrunner and Lords of Vegas. I’ll keep you posted when I finally bring them to a gaming night.

My uber-generous Secret Santa gave me so many gifts!

So this week, I played Russian Railroads three times this week. I do love the smell of freshly punched-out cardboard …

Francis Drake: Great game and components

Francis Drake: Great game and components

I love the treasure chests, boats and gems in Francis Drake.
I love the treasure chests, plastic boats and gems in Francis Drake. And those barrel supplies in the back totally remind me of old-school root-beer candy.

I purchased Francis Drake about a month ago at BGG Con. I first played it back in May and have been thinking about it ever since. The game was out of my budget on Amazon, but I got a good deal on it at the Eagle/Gryphon Games booth in Dallas.

The game is a great medium-heavy euro, but, in all honesty, it’s the components that totally sold it for me. It has plastic ships, wood tokens, cardboard treasure chests and glass beads.

Let’s take a look at all the component goodness …

Arkham Horror love

Arkham Horror love

I am part of an Arkham Horror gaming group that meets up once a month. Arkham Horror is one of my uber-favorite games, but it’s hard to find people who are down to play it. Until I connected with these Arkham folks this past summer, I would play it about once a year. Yeah, pretty sad for a game I adore.

Arkham Horror
Arkham Horror, a cooperative game for 1-8 players.

Arkham Horror is a cooperative adventure game set in the world of H.P. Lovecraft and his Cthulhu mythos. Who is H.P. Lovecraft, you ask? Lovecraft was an American horror fiction writer from the early 20th century. He didn’t see any success during his life, but his works later influenced many writers such as Stephen King and Neil Gainman, and various works of pop culture, such as Batman and HBO’s “True Detective.” In Lovecraft’s Cthulhu mythos, Great Old Ones exist, and humankind is unable to to comprehend their cosmic horrors should a Great Old One (also known as an Ancient One) awakens.
