Patchwork: Quilting Tetris-style

Patchwork: Quilting Tetris-style

My two friends were in town last weekend, and we took a quick road trip to Sedona, Horseshoe Bend and Antelope Canyon in northern Arizona. The state never ceases to amaze me in terms of scenery. It truly has some of the most gorgeous locations in the U.S. I posted a few photos on Instragram from the trip.

One friend left on Sunday afternoon, and the other on Sunday night. That left us with a few hours of chill time in between and, of course, some quick games. I busted out Patchwork since it’s a 2-player game and fairly short with a game time of 30 minutes.

Glass Road … a short Uwe game!

Glass Road … a short Uwe game!

Let’s take a trip back 700 years ago to the Bavarian Forest where the tradition of glass-making resides along the Glass Road. This is the setting of the Uwe Rosenberg’s game Glass Road. I love, love Uwe’s games (here I talk about Agricola and Le Havre), even backing a Kickstarter campaign to get board game T-shirts. Hell ya, Uwe is my homeboy! His games are well made, and Glass Road especially has a genius mechanic of the production wheels. But Uwe games tend to be on the longer side, which I totally don’t mind but understand how that can turn off people from his games. For such a brain-burner of a game, Glass Road is actually quite short.

Things I backed on Kickstarter

Things I backed on Kickstarter

Hello, friends of the Internet! I had a home emergency last week that took up a lot of time to get repaired. Board-gaming, blogging and a couple other things just fell by the wayside. My home AC broke. Ugh. In most other places in the U.S., this would not be a major issue. But in Arizona, where temps hovered around 110 degrees last week, this was a BIG. FREAKING. DEAL. So now I’m sitting in my condo, basking in the coolness of central air blasting out of my new energy-efficient unit. Woot woot! Anywhooo …

I recently backed two projects on Kickstarter. Kickstarter is a global crowdfunding platform, where creators introduce projects they need funding for, and people of the Internet pledge to give money for said project. I personally haven’t encountered any negative experiences on this (*knock on wood*), but I have only backed projects from established companies that I’ve purchased items from before either in person or online. I’ve heard horror stories of items missing deadlines by years and other shady transactions.

Bohnanza: Let’s go farm some beans!

Bohnanza: Let’s go farm some beans!

I swear I must’ve been a farmer in a previous life because a few of my favorite board games deal with farming. Games such as Agricola, Scoville and Bohnanza. Or maybe I’m just so head over heels over rock-star-game-designer-extraordinaire Uwe Rosenberg that if he loves farming, then so do I! Fun fact: the title of the game is a play on the word bean in German, which is bohne. And all the beans have funny little personalities from the cool artwork.

Bohnanza is Rosenberg’s first game, way back in 1997. That’s pretty ancient in the board-game world. The version I have, published by Rio Grande Games, game out in 2000. In the small print on the rule book, the Rio Grande email address is still an aol account. Hee hee, how times have changed since this was published! Bohnanza plays 2-7 players and lasts about 45 minutes. The goal of the game is for each player to plant beans in 2 or 3 bean fields and try to sell them for the most money. The player with the most money after 3 rounds wins the game.
